Today's Top Ten Tuesday topic is genre freebie which is perfect because this week is Read Across America week, and I want to highlight horror for kids.
"Read Across America is an annual event celebrated on or near March 2nd, which is the birthday of children's author Dr. Seuss. It is a nationwide reading celebration that was created by the National Education Association (NEA) in 1997 to promote literacy and encourage a love of reading among children."
If you are a teacher or a librarian, there are kids in your current group that love horror. I promise! Please, please, please if you want everyone in your current group to be an independent reader when they move on from you - include fun, spooky content. You will reach a reader if you do. I promise.
Below you will find my recommendations for middle grade horror novels:
Where the Woods End by Charlotte Salter
The Girl and the Ghost by Hanna Alkaf
Root Magic by Eden Royce
Ghost Girl by Ally Malinenko
Ghost Squad by Claribel A. Ortega
Be Wary of the Silent Woods by Svetlana Chmakova
Hide and Seeker by Daka Hermon
Séance Tea Party by Reimena Yee
Thirteens by Kate Alice Marshall
Doll Bones by Holly Black
Wait Till Helen Comes by Mary Downing Hahn
The In-Between by Rebecca Ansari
Cece Rios and the Desert of Souls by Kaela Rivera

I love this list! I've read a couple of middle grade horror...and they're actually quite spooky! I remember loving Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark when I was younger.

I wish there'd been more middle grade horror when I was a kid in the 80's. Reading Stephen King and Robert Bloch at that age might not have been good for me. Hahaha.
ReplyDeleteHere is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thank you!
I've never really been a massive horror reader, but I love your choice this week and how you're highlighting these books for teachers and librarians to give their kids. I think the closest I've come to reading an MG horror is VE Schwab's Cassidy Blake series, but they're really more paranormal fantasy than horror!

the scariest MG book I've ever read was The Dollhouse Murders - an oldie but goodie! :) My TTT
ReplyDeleteI used to love a MG horror book back in the day! I'm trying to think which ones would have been my favorite. They might have actually been YA when I was reading them as a MG reader.
ReplyDeleteWay to overachieve with so many entries. I do not recall reading horror as a kid though some of those fairytales were pretty scary
ReplyDeleteI always loved scary type books when I was a kid.
ReplyDeleteMary Downing Hahn is always a good author to read from. All the books on this list look so creepy.
ReplyDeleteI love that there are so many MG horror novels out there!
ReplyDeleteI haven't read any of these but they all sound like so much fun! Thanks for sharing! :D
