Recent Updates and Currently Reading | January 2

Happy new year!! I hope the new year has started out right for you. We watched Encanto last night, and I loved it. It was such a beautiful movie. I didn't know going into it the songs were written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, but I figured it out once the songs started!

Do you spend time selecting your first book of the year or do you just continue on/dive into whatever is next on your TBR?

Finished Reading

The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson

The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson ⭐⭐⭐⭐★ - I think this is my rating. I started reading The Way of King January 1, 2021, and I finished it December 31, 2021. 😆 I enjoyed it, but it was a struggle.

Currently Reading

Rock Paper Scissors by Alice Feeney A History of Wild Places by Shea Ernshaw

Rock Paper Scissors by Alice Feeney - I put this one on hold to finish up The Way of Kings before the end of the year. I will get back to it soon because I'm really liking it.

A History of Wild Places by Shea Ernshaw - This was my pick to start the new year. I'm on the fence as to whether that was a good decision or not.

Added to the TBR

Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse The Other Black Girl by Zakiya Dalila Harris Lesser Evil by Timothy Zahn

Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse - I've seen this on so many favorites lists. I'm hoping to read it before the sequel is released in April.

The Other Black Girl by Zakiya Dalila Harris - My friend Audra recommended this to me, and I've been anxious to pick it up!

Lesser Evil by Timothy Zahn - I just finished rewatching all of The Mandalorian again. It puts me in such a deep, deep Star Wars mood.

Amari and the Night Brothers by B.B. Alston The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick A History of Wild Places by Shea Ernshaw

Amari and the Night Brothers by B.B. Alston - You all know I love middle grade, and this book seems to be universally *loved* so I had to have it.

The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick - My youngest son just read Hugo Cabret from his school library, and he certain we needed to own this. I have never read it so now I can!

A History of Wild Places by Shea Ernshaw - I bought A History of Wild Places to kick off the new year of reading.

  1. I saw Black Sun EVERYWHERE last year. Hope all your new books are fantastic. I did not think that hard about my first book of the year. I had some library holds come through, and I always try to prioritize those. I finished it today, and it was good.

  3. I am glad you enjoyed Encanto too. My family and I loved it as well. Lin-Manuel Miranda is very talented.

This is the first year I actually have carryover books from the year before I am reading. I did start my official first book yesterday though and am enjoying it. I am glad you liked Cackle too. I have Black Sun on my TBR too and am looking forward to reading it. I hope we both love it. Enjoy all your new books! Have a great week and Happy New Year!

  5. I usually just continue reading but for some reason this year was different and I wanted to pick a book I was sure I would like (I failed), but then started 2 other books, LOL! Happy New Year!

  7. Long time no visit! I disappeared for a while, but I'm back and I'm excited to start reading your blog again. :)

I've only read one book by Brandon Sanderson, Elantris and I loved it. I've heard, however, The Way of Kings is hard to get through because of how dense it is. I plan to read Mistborn this year. It's been on my TBR for 14 years, lol, and one of my BFFs (and now her 17-year-old son) keep pushing me to read the series.

Rock Paper Scissors sounds awesome and it might get into my head, though, because my husband has face blindness, lol. I really want to read this book now. Ha!

I hope to see you over on my blog too. Good luck with 2022.

  8. So many good looking books on your list.

I chose my first book based on my blog tour schedule. I'm reading My Darling Husband and it's been so good.

I hope you have a great week! Happy New Year!

  10. I was still in the middle of a book on the 1st that I'm just finishing up today, so I didn't start the new year with a new book. But I'm hoping to read Such a Pretty Smile next😁

  11. I haven't started a new book in 2022 yet because I'm still reading a bunch of books I started last year. I might do a reread for my first book of the year. That way, I know I'll enjoy it. :)

  12. I don't choose a new book to start the year. I just keep reading what is already on my stack and what I need to read and review next. I'm about a month ahead. The first book review posted for the year was read October 31. The book I'm actually reading will have its review posted on February 2. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

  15. I really want to watch Encanto, since I'm a big fan of the Disney/Pixar animated movies, so I'm glad to hear it worked for you! Perhaps next weekend we'll cram it in. And I usually just keep reading whatever I'm reading at the start of the year, but I've heard from several people besides you who pick a book to start the year off, and I do like that idea!

All of these books sound great—I can't believe you stuck with The Way of Kings for that long, so I'm glad it ended up being mostly worthwhile! And I hope A History of Wild Places improves. Also, I love the TBR books you added—I have family who really enjoyed Black Sun, and I really need to try The Invention of Hugo Cabret as well. Thanks so much for the wonderful post, Jen, and happy new year!

  16. I thought Encanto was fantastic!! We watched it for New Year's Eve with four of my five children (the 18 year old was out with friends) and then watched it again today. I think it's a new favorite that our 7-year-old will play at least two (or ten) more times this week.

I was really impressed with Amari, so it's no big suprise that it was announced to be in the top 6 finalized for Cybils Middle Grade speculative fiction. YAY! I really hope you enjoy it! Thanks for linking up at the KidLit #imwayr, Jennifer, and have a fantastic reading week!

I think I missed the boat on CACKLE in 2021, but I'm going to make a point of reading it in Spooky Season 2022! - Melinda @ A Web of Stories
