Recent Updates and Currently Reading | July 1

Happy July! I can't believe how fast summer is flying by. My kids will be back in school before I know it!

GDRP has made blogging in blogger a lot tougher. I'm not getting notified of comments so feel free to hit me up on twitter if you need a quicker response. Please know I'm not ignoring you on purpose!

Posted Last Week

I didn't manage to post here on the blog last week, but I did write a guest post for Sci-Fi and Scary on one of my favorite topics: Underrated Horror Books! Check it out if you want to see some horror books that deserve more attention.

Currently Reading

*These were not all started this week but what I've been reading through over the last few weeks.

Cold in July by Joe Lansdale - I'm halfway through Cold in July, and I'm very interested in knowing what's happening! This book had one heck of a start.

Entropy in Bloom by Jeremy Robert Johnson - As you will see from this post, I'm having a lot of trouble focusing on what I'm reading. I have read a couple of the short stories from this collection for the simple sake of reading a complete story or two. This is my first experience with Jeremy Robert Johnson, and so far I really like his style.

Red Rising (Red Rising Saga #1) by Pierce Brown - This was an impulse grab from the library. I'm enjoying it, but I'm definitely going to have to renew it and put some focus on it!

Providence by Caroline Kepnes - If all goes well, I will finish Providence later today. I've decided Caroline Kepnes now lives on my autobuy author list.

Harry Potter y la piedra filosofal (Harry Potter #1) by J.K. Rowling, Alicia Dellepiane Rawson (Translator) - I'd like to start reading some books in Spanish. I'm planning to read books that were originally written in Spanish, but I'm working my way up to that. Harry Potter translated into Spanish is a great place for me to start because I know the story so well. I'm really enjoying it.

Off Season (Dead River Series #1) by Jack Ketchum - I read Off Season this week with Lilyn. I love Ketchum, but this book didn't really do it for me. I should be able to have a review out for it later this week.

Recent Acquisitions

Cien años de soledad (One Hundred Years of Solitude) by Gabriel García Márquez - I put a call out on Twitter for books originally written in Spanish. I got some great recommendations (Thank you, Matt Godfrey!) and decided to purchase a copy of Cien años de soledad.

If you have any Spanish recommendations, please let me know!

The Changeling by Victor LaValle - It is time for me to finally read The Changeling! The only thing I know about it is how much it is loved by other horror readers.

Lost Highways: Dark Fictions From the Road by D. Alexander Ward - This is collection will be released in July. Stories by Joe R. Lansdale, Kelli Owen, Jonathan Janz, Damien Angelica Walters, Christopher Buehlman, Josh Malerman, Rio Youers, and many others!

So what about you? Let me know what you're reading this week or leave me some links!

This post is being shared as part of Book Date's It's Monday! What Are You Reading? and Caffeinated Book Reviewer's The Sunday Post.

  1. I will have to check out that post. I love Horror reads. I don't read them often enough and I few bad ones will make me skip the genre for a while. Have a wonderful week.

I am one of those that has never read or seen a Harry Potter book or movie! YAY me!

    1. I'm a mood reader so I can understand how a dud book would put you off of the genre for a while. The horror genre is deceptively large, though, since it pretty much spans all of the other genres within itself.

You've never experienced Harry Potter? I'm having trouble agreeing with the yay you. LOL. I'm a big HP fan. :)

  2. That's unfortunate about the comments. I use blogger, but my comments are through Disqus, so thankfully nothing much has changed. I hope Blogger gets that figured out! I hope you enjoy Red Rising! That book is forever on my TBR. Have a great week :D

    1. I'm glad you can still get comment notifications through disqus. It really is frustrating. :( Red Rising has been on my TBR forever, too, which is why I want to buckle down and do this thing. :)

  3. I’m not getting notified of comments either. It’s discouraging. Red Rising wasn’t for me. I hope you like it better than I did.

    1. Really? I think I comment bombed like 5 of your posts last night. I would have no idea if someone did that to me so you probably won't see them. Haha. I hope they fix this!

  4. I've been curious about The Changeling so if you like it, I'll definitely be picking it up. I've kind of been starting a lot and not finishing much lately plus I'm behind on reviews. I saw your guest post - it was awesome. I'm waiting for my library to get a copy of Providence. I can't believe they don't have it already.

    1. I really, really hope I get to read it soon. I'm so tired of not reading all of these books I really want to read. Time needs to just freeze for a while so I can READ. I hope your library gets Providence. I wound up finishing it today, and I really enjoyed it.

  5. I loved Red Rising! I hope you enjoy that book too! I'm also having problems with getting notifications about when people are posting comments on my posts. I hope Blogger gets this fixed soon.

  6. Yeah crazy that it's July already. And GDRP- ugh. The no comment notification thing is SO annoying.

Sounds like you're enjoying Providence! I'm seeing that one a lot, might have to take a look. Lost Highways sounds kinda cool too.

    Have a great 4th!

  7. Lost Highways sounds really good. I have a review copy of The Changling that I never got around to reading-oops. Now that you've reminded me I should get on that!

    1. We both need to get onto reading The Changeling. What are we waiting for? :)

  8. Yeah, I haven't been getting comment notifications either! It's so annoying! I've had to go in manually to see what's going on, only to find out I had over 30 comments to reply to. But I finally caught up last night. Lol.

It's so cool that you're reading books in Spanish! Spanish is actually my native language, but I don't think I've ever read a book in Spanish... not recently anyway. I almost get flustered reading in Spanish because in school I've just always had read/do my school work in English. I can speak it well, read it okay, but it's the writing that really gets me. Lol. Idk, maybe I should start reading in Spanish too. Maybe start with a book I know well like you did with HP!

    Have a great week! :)

  9. GDPR has really messed up Blogger’s comment system. All sorts of weird stuff has been happening with the comments on my blog. It’s cool that you’re reading Harry Potter in Spanish. I took Spanish lessons for 7 years when I was a kid but never progressed beyond picture books. Have a good week!

  10. Nice, glad to hear you're having such a great time with Providence! It's a weird book, but I think it's the first time I've ever read a Lovecraft-inspired book and thought to myself, wow, this author really gets it!

  11. The GDPR is a pain! Enjoy your books you have coming up to read!

  12. So you clearly loved Providence then? And, yes, GDPR - is an absolute pain in the proverbial *shakes fist*

  13. Off Season looks good. I love Red Rising! Hope your week is amazing!

  14. I need to get going on The Changeling too. I bought it a few months ago with a giftcard and meant to read it asap but things never work out that way :) I'm reading Providence right now when I sneak in a few pages and it's pretty darn good!
