Recent Updates and Currently Reading | February 25

I only finished one book this week, but it was amazing. (No posts to report from me this week! Sorry. I'm just happy to be reading at all right now.)

I'm going to see Annihilation later today. I'm excited. I keep hearing amazing things about the movie. It's obvious that is goes in an entirely different direction from the book so I'm really curious where they are going to take it.

Read Last Week

Bird Box by Josh Malerman - I think I put off reading Bird Box this long because part of me thought I wouldn't like it. I was a dumbass. I loved Bird Box.

Added to My Shelves

Slowly We Rot by Bryan Smith - I was reminded of this book over at Bark's Book Nonsense. I had really wanted to read it a couple of years ago so I grabbed it on my Kindle. I made it about 10% before I DNF'ed it. The writing was great, and it seemed like a great traditional zombie story, but it took a turn I didn't want to follow.

The Cellar by Richard Laymon - This was another Kindle grab. I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that this book has been on my shelf unread for a long time. Maybe putting it on my Kindle will help me read it?

Summer of Night by Dan Simmons - I know. I've been reading Summer of Night forever. I made it over halfway in my book, and I realized why I keep avoiding picking it up: the tiny margins and the tiny print of my paperback! So I bought the audio which is great. :)

Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery - Jenni Elyse is hosting a readalong of Anne of Green Gables through the month of March if you want to join in. I bought my copy yesterday, and I'm looking forward to discovering why I loved Anne so much as a young girl.

The Listener by Robert McCammon - My finished copy of The Listener arrived! This means it's available to read now, and you should.

Tenebrion by James H. Longmore - I met James Longmore at an author signing last night. He was adorable. I love people who love horror. I say it all of the time, but they are the nicest people. Tenebrion is about a group of amateur film makers who are making a film in an abandoned school. The director of the film is very meticulous about the details. During a scene in which they are summoning a demon, they get the details too perfect. "The devil is in the details."

So what about you? Let me know what you're reading this week or leave me some links!

    1. Yes! I couldn't have asked for a better reading week even though it was only the one book.

    1. Thanks! I'm very fortunate to have a local bookstore that cares about bringing in and supporting authors.

  3. Bird Box sounds great! Sorry Slowly we rot didn't turn out how you wanted. The retro looking cover is neat.

I hope you have a great week! Happy Reading!

    1. That's OK, Michelle. It was more "me" than it was the book. I'm just in a picky place, and I'm giving myself a lot of leeway to DNF when a book isn't right for me. Have a great week!!

  4. I'm dying to see Annihilation but it looks terrifying. I just don't remember being scared when I was reading the book. Creeped out, but not terrified. I just saw my (unread) copy of Bird Box yesterday, maybe that's a sign I need to read it!

    1. I think it looks terrifying, too! There were some creepy scenes that *could* have been terrifying in the book. I'm curious to see what they do with it. Yes, read Bird Box!! I'd love to hear what you think of it.

  5. It's quality over quantity here. Reading one book and loving it is better than reading 5 books and they are all meh. I am so out of touch with films, I had to google Annihilation. Hope you enjoy the movie.

  6. I'm going to see Annihilation today too. I know it’s completely different than the book but I’m interested to see where they take it. I need to get my hands on Bird Box.

  7. Oh I loved Bird Box as well. I recently read and reviewed it, like last month I think. I have to check out The Listener. Thanks for the rec. I am currently reading Ink Princess. I had a few DNFs this week.
I hope you enjoy the movie today. Have a great week and happy reading!

    1. I'm going to hunt down your review after I write mine. I wrote something down when I finished, but I can't find it. Haha. *sigh* Hopefully I will find it so I don't have to start over and say it again. Have a great week!

  8. I really should pick up Bird Box. I don't think I've heard many bad things about it. Hope you enjoy the movie. I read Summer of Night years and years ago. I might reread it one day because I don't remember it much but do remember really liking it. I am in the middle of a cozy right now but I'm craving horror and fantasy so it will be up next. Tenebrion sounds awesome (running off to add it to wishlist).

    1. You should totally pick up Bird Box! It's going to be a Sandra Bullock movie in December (and it's just intense and awesome). They are supposed to be making a movie from Summer of Night at some point, too. :)

  9. I've had Bird Box for ages - perhaps I should give it a bit of priority.

  11. The Anne of Green Gables read-along sounds fun :) I haven't been the best at reading a ton of books this year, but maybe a buddy read would help me out? Enjoy the movie! I'm thinking of sneaking out for one this evening - just have to figure out what I want to see!

  13. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on the Annihilation movie. I hope I'll get to it later this week, but I've got an anniversary screening of Videodrome on the calendar too...

Bird Box has been lurking at the edges of my radar for a little bit. Hearing you loved it makes me think I need to go ahead and buy it!

  16. I have had Bird Box on my list for the longest time too, and I held off reading it because of some doubts as well. Now that I know you loved it, I should probably push those reservations aside and take a look!

  19. I used to love it when a new Richard Laymon book hit the shelves. As a horror book lover it was terrible to hear of his early death but obviously it was worse for his family. I still have two of his books to read at some point this year.

    1. I have quite a few Laymons I haven't read yet. I think I started reading him just after he passed away. I remember No Sanctuary being one of my first Laymon books. I think someone finished writing that one after he passed.

  20. I agree with you Jennifer I barely manage to read many books during the week, but as long as you're enjoying it that's the main thing. I'm still waiting for my first five star book of the year :( I hope you have a great week :)

    1. I hope you land on a 5 star book soon!! I know what it's like to go all year without a single 5 star read. I don't wish that on anyone.

  21. I agree Bird Box was out of this world awesome! I haven't reviewed it yet. I'm saving it for Halloween :) I didn't enjoy annihilation the book but I'm looking forward to the movie too!

  22. Ugh, sorry about Slowly We Rot. I'll give it a go but now I'm a little worried. Did it get rapey? Tell me it didn't get rapey? I don't want to read that.

    1. No, it didn't get rapey, but rape of a minor was alluded to before I quit reading. I'm just being really picky right now. I didn't believe what I was reading which made me quit caring what happened to the characters. I don't want to read a zombie book where I don't care if the characters live or die. You may have a completely different reaction. You should still give it a try.
