Top 10+ Recommendations for Someone New to Audiobooks

If you are considering giving audiobooks a try, these are some of my all time favorite narrators and audiobooks.

Kate Mulgrew

I love Kate Mulgrew's performance in both NOS4A2 and The Fireman by Joe Hill.

Frank Muller

I give a lot of credit to Frank Muller for getting me as far into The Dark Tower as he did. Unfortunately he passed away before completing the series. That might be why I haven't finished the series either.

I have found other great audios like All Quiet on the Western Front by simply seeking out Frank Muller narrations.

Rob Inglis

I love Rob Inglis's performance in the entire The Lord of the Rings trilogy. These are audiobooks I love to revisit.

Jim Dale

My absolute favorite audios of all time are the Harry Potter audios narrated by Jim Dale. I've actually tried to listen to other Jim Dale audiobooks and my brain won't let me. No matter what he's reading, I try to place it into the wizarding world of Harry Potter. I highly, highly recommend listening to the entire Harry Potter series via Jim Dale. The audios are extraordinary.

Wil Wheaton

I've heard great things about other books narrated by Wil Wheaton, but I think the only one I've listened to is Ready Player One. I would recommend it even if the movie wasn't about to release, but there is no better time than right now.

Bonus: I just saw that the upcoming Joe Hill book (Strange Weather) will be narrated by both Kate Mulgrew and Wil Wheaton (among others)!

Michael Page

Michael Page has narrated a lot of audiobooks, and the Gentleman Bastard series is among some of my favorite audios of all time.

Tom Stechschulte

Tom Stechschulte is another prolific narrator, and I love his narration of Robert McCammon's Swan Song. Swan Song is in my top three favorite books of all time (in any format). If the size of Swan Song has ever prevented you from taking the plunge, do not be afraid to go the audio route with this one.

Tom Stechschulte also narrated Cormac McCarthy's The Road. I haven't listened to it, but bet his voice is awesome for that one, too, so I'm including it here.

If you have any favorite audiobooks or narrators, please let me know in the comments!! If you are new to audio, I hope this gives you some options to consider.

  1. I really wish I could get into audio books. I think my problem is that when I'm in the car driving, I prefer to listen to music. Same goes if I am cleaning or doing stuff around the house. I tried a short story once and listened to it before bed but ended up falling asleep. Guess they just aren't for me. I envy people who enjoy them because they seem to get so much more reading done.

    1. I would love for you to find the "right" audio, but that could be a challenge. I probably clean better to music, too, but I do love a good audiobook. My favorite time to listen is at night when I'm winding down to sleep.

  2. Great idea. I really enjoy listening to audiobooks on my way to work and using them helps me fit a lot more reading in. I'm glad they seem to be taking off more and more.
I thought Wil Wheton reading Ready Player One was great too.

    1. I'm glad they are gaining popularity, too. I used to spend a fortune on CDs, and now they are so much easier and cheaper to purchase (or get from the library!)

  3. I should start listening to more audio books! :) I recently listened to Roxane Gay's Hunger read by her and it was freaking great!

    Happy TTT!

  4. I don't listen to enough audiobooks to be an expert on the subject. In fact, I read so few audiobooks that I think they all kind of sound weird. I guess I'm just used to the sound of my own voice in my head.

    1. Audiobook players do come with speed adjustments, and I find that helps a lot for me. Some narrators are definitely not as good as others. I have trouble with authors who narrate their own books. They don't always have a narrators voice.

  5. I should try audiobooks again, I get distracted but maybe if I listened to the right books on audio I wouldn't have as much trouble. And yeah maybe I just ned the right narrator! I'd love to listen to Lord of the Rings, that's a great idea. Love that vintage artwork too!

    1. I think it does help to find the right narrator for you. There are definitely books out there I have had trouble listening to.

  6. My audiobook cd collection consists of Stephen Fry's Harry Potter books and the first two Game of Thrones books! The cd versions are pretty expensive on my budget and I'm scared to buy something I won't like! So much want The Hunger Games and Stephen King's It to listen to though!

    1. I need to get back to the first Game of Thrones book! I listened to about half of it. I think it would help to relisten now that I know who the characters are. There are just so many to keep track of.

I used to buy CDs back before audible. They were sooo expensive! I hear the narration for IT is really good.

  7. Edoardo Ballerini's readings of Robert McCammon's Matthew Corbett novels, starting with SPEAKS THE NIGHTBIRD, are incredible!

    1. Hi, Hunter! I'm actually in the middle of listening to Speaks the Nightbird right now. :) Once I finish my reread of Stephen King's It, I plan to get back to listening to Nightbird. I spent a lot of my audible credits last year on the Matthew Corbett books. I'm excited to revisit the early ones and finally read the later ones.
