January 13 | Currently Reading

READING FUNK. Nothing I'm picking up right now is doing it for me. I DNF'ed books all weekend long.

Last week I finished reading I Am Malala. It was a really great read. I also read Not a Drop to Drink by Mindy McGinnis. I wasn't a big fan of that one.

This week I'm reading Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson. This book has a lot of KA-POW and not much else right now.

My kids and I finished reading 5 Minute Marvel Stories. It was fantastic. If you have a young reader you want to introduce to all of the Marvel heroes and villians, this book is excellent. We also started reading the first A to Z Mysteries book The Absent Author by Ron Roy.

I'd love to hear what you are reading this week. Let me know in the comments or leave me a link!

  1. I feel your pain with your reading funk! I had such a bad slump at the end of last year, I just couldn't find anything to hold my interest! I just finished Three Things You Need to Know About Rockets which was actually pretty annoying and am now on World After which I'm loving so far!

    1. That's where I am now. Nothing is working for me. I'm glad you are loving World After!

  2. I go through those periods too. :( I usually revert to a favorite comfort read until the mood passes. I usually get them after I have read an amazing book, like that book ruined me for all other books for a while.

    1. Yep. After reading Fortune's Pawn and I Am Malala - nothing is living up to them. I will try to figure out which comfort read will kick it.

  3. Sorry about your reading funk, but it happens. I might have to pick up that Marvel book for myself!

    1. I loved it, but I'm not very versed in all things Marvel. It was great for me to learn it all along with my kids.

  4. We all know the funk! My favorite is when I finish a book, stare at my "to read" list and just don't even want to pick any of them up!

I liked Steelheart. It was fun.

Been in a Fantasy / Sci-Fi funk, so I'm on book 3 in a row out of the genre. Reading The October List by Jeffery Deaver. Good thriller to break the epic fantasy rut.

    1. Oh, yes. The dreaded "I don't have anything to read". I've been considering picking up a thriller. Maybe I should read the next Reacher book...

  5. Loved Sanderson's Mistborn series - will be interested in what you think of Steelheart. I'm kinda scared to read more of his stuff as a friend has and wasn't as impressed as she was with Mistborn. You can check out my week here

    1. Are you big on character development? If you don't need to care about any of the characters, I wouldn't worry. There's a lot of action and fun stuff going on. If you need character development... you might not be impressed either.

  7. 5 Min Marvel Stories looks great. My oldest daughter already digs Avengers and my youngest is curious (they both love Black widow) so I'll be checking that out. And interesting to see your take on Steelheart- I've heard so much ra-ra for that but every time I look at it I just don't see the need to buy it, for whatever reason. Maybe my instinct was right.

    Have a good week.

  8. Great to know about the 5 Minute Marvel Stories--I have several nephews who are obsessed with super heroes. While quite formulaic those A to Z Mystery books are good fun. My youngest is currently working her way through the titles in the related Capital Mysteries series by Ron Roy.

  10. I'm listening to Steelheart on audio and while I like it, I'm not hooked by it yet.

  11. I find that it's always best to take a break from reading when I am in a funk. That way I am still searching for that book that catches my eye and (ususally) brings me out of the funk. The A - Z mystery books are SUPER fun. Have you tried the calendar mysteries? I think the author you mentioned writes for both series.
